Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per chevron Azure and Argent; in chief a four pointed mullet of the like above a bar wavy Or charged with a barrulet dancett Gules; in base an eagle's head totem Proper.  Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "ARCTIC SUPPORT" in Black letters.

Symbolism
The polestar on the blue symbolizes the North Star in Alaska's night skies, always present as a guide and reference point.  The wavy bar represents the pulsing veil of the aurora borealis, the colorful phenomena of the Northland.  The stylized eagle's head, a native Alaskan device proclaiming the owner's legendary descent, embodies the unit's support mission to the scout battalions.  The eagle is swift and has penetrating eyesight and exceptional hearing; it also warns of approaching enemies.  The chevron division of the shield symbolizes support, strength, and with the color white, also alludes to Mt. Denali and Alaska's abundant snow fields and glaciers.  The eagle, an honored guardian spirit, represents the heritage of the Alaska Army National Guard.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 10 January 1989.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Alaska Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Azure, the aurora borealis blended from dexter base Purple through Red, Orange, Yellow, to Green to chief and repeated inversely to sinister base behind a totem pole of three figures, an eagle, a bear, and a walrus, paleways affront all Proper.
